The fibres and yarns are produced at our state-of-the-art production plant in Hammarsdale, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa.
Fibres that are cut to a predetermined length. They are not continuous filaments, as is the case with synthetic hair tow and BCF yarn.
Various sizes from 30 – 130mm can be manufactured on the bulk production line. Shorter sizes are available in equestrian and concrete fibre only.
Yes, the fibre and yarn produced by PFE Extrusion are available in a variety of standard colours, or a colour can be matched according to end-user requirements.
The processes are continuously monitored to ensure that the fibre and yarn is produced in an environmentally friendly and energy efficient way, with strict adherence to ISO 14001 standards.
Spin finish is a liquid applied during manufacturing to ensure even stretching of the fiber and to minimise friction.
The fibre manufactured is of round cross section.
Staple fibres are used in the manufacture of nonwoven needlepunch textiles, with lifestyle applications in flooring and outdoor carpeting, and technical applications in geotextiles, filtration media, and automotive components. Staple fibres are also used in technical applications in the spinning of yarn, and as additives to equestrian footings and concrete mixtures.
Continuous fibre is used in the cosmetic application of artificial hair. BCF yarn is used in the manufacture of tufted carpeting.
Decitex (or the abbreviation D’tex) is the metric unit in which the fibre and yarn thickness is measured. Denier is the imperial unit of measurement. For example, 1 D’tex means 10000 metres of fibre weighs 1 gram. 1 Denier means 10000 yards of fibre weighs 1 ounce.
The titre range of the staple fibre varies from 2.2 D’tex to 110 D’tex. The titre range of the continuous hair fibre varies from 28 D’tex to 90 D’tex. The standard decitex of the BCF yarn is 2100 D’tex.
The range varies from 20 – 120m
Using special additives in the extrusion process can reduce their flammability.
The UV stability provides information in respect of the preservation of the mechanical properties of the fibre. The fibre produced can be stabilised to varying degrees depending on the end-user requirements.
The light fastness relates to the preservation of the colour, and a minimum light fastness of 6 according to the blue scale is specified.
The fibres produced by PFE Extrusion are resistant to salts, dyes and acids.
The melting point of polypropylene is approximately 170 degrees Celsius.
The application of spin finish on the fibre can be hydrophobic, hydrophilic or siliconised, depending on the end-user requirements.

Yes, our sister company Van Dyck  can provide finished samples of a variety of needlepunch and tufted carpet qualities, while our sister company VDC Geotextiles can providea variety of non-woven needlepunch geotextiles. Our laboratory can supply packaged braid samples of the continuous hair fibre.
The staple fibre is packed in bales and covered in LDPE polyethylene bags with polyester strapping. The bale weight can be varied to suit shipping requirements, and will typically be from 180 –280kgs. The exception is the concrete fibre, which is packed in cardboard cartons.
The continuous hair fibre is wound on large bobbins, and individually packed in cardboard cartons. The bobbin weight is typically 25 – 30kgs.
The BCF yarn is wound on small bobbins or cones, stacked on pallets and shrink wrapped in clear plastic. The bobbin weight is typically 3.5 to 4kgs, and there are approximately 125 – 150 bobbins per pallet.
The bales of fibre, hair bobbins, and pallets of yarn should be stored in a cool and dry area, without direct exposure to sunlight.
